A Deep Dive into the Apocalyptic World of "Path of the Pale Rider" with Laurie Calcaterra

Welcome back to another episode of Storycomic Presents, hosted by yours truly, Barney Smith. Today's episode is a special treat as we welcome back a friend of the show and a remarkable talent in the world of comics, Laurie Calcaterra.

Laurie is no stranger to our platform, and we always have a good time chatting with her. She's the creative genius behind the highly acclaimed Kickstarter project, "Path of the Pale Rider Issue 4." For those who want to dive deeper into her work, you can find it at Path of the Pale Rider.

What makes Laurie's work stand out is her unique blend of skills. With a background in martial arts movie production and a deep-rooted love for comics, she brings a rich tapestry of experiences to her creations. Interestingly, "Path of the Pale Rider" was initially conceived as a screenplay before Laurie decided it would be better told through graphic media.

An Intriguing Premise

In today's episode, Laurie delves deep into the intriguing world she has crafted. Imagine a world where the dead no longer die, leading to an apocalyptic landscape filled with undead bears, riots, and the collapse of society. The story follows protagonist Jude St. Clair as he embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind this phenomenon. Is it a government conspiracy, a chemical spill, or even more bizarre? Laurie leaves no stone unturned as she discusses the inspirations and challenges of creating such a mind-bending narrative.

Don't Miss Out!

This was a compelling conversation that explored not just the creative genius behind "Path of the Pale Rider" but also the intricate details that make the story so captivating. If you haven't already, check out the episode for an in-depth look at one of the most exciting projects in comics today.

Family Reading Time: Why 'Bird & Squirrel' is a Dad-Approved Choice

As a dad of three young graphic novel enthusiasts, finding a book that captivates all is a win in my book. "Bird & Squirrel: All Tangled Up" by James Burks did just that. After enjoying Burks' "Agent 9," we were eager to dive into this one, and it didn't disappoint.

Even though it's the fifth in the series, you don't need prior knowledge to jump in. The story is about Bird and Squirrel babysitting Squirrel's daughter, Birdie, and their quest to find Bigfoot. Squirrel's fatherly role resonated with me, while Bird added humor as the "fun uncle," a combo that had my kids laughing and engaged.

What I appreciate as a parent is the book's educational angle. It teaches life lessons like the importance of being prepared and valuing family, all wrapped in vibrant illustrations. The adventure is filled with twists, including a hilarious encounter with a giant spider that had us all chuckling.

By the end, my kids were already asking for the next book in the series. In summary, "Bird & Squirrel: All Tangled Up" is a perfect blend of humor, heart, and a dash of mystery. It's a fantastic read for families who love young reader graphic novels and has earned a spot on our must-read list.
