Storycomic Weekly Newsletter: January 9th
Podcast Updates
We had no new podcasts this week, but I did work diligently on booking new guests for the first 3 months this year. I’m excited to see what I bring you!
Project Updates
I did more ‘Pixar in a Box’ classes and came to the sudden realization that my ‘2 Years’ story actually started with Act 2. This means that I have to do a lot of writing to set up the entire storyline to make the reader want to follow the main character, John.
Act 1 sets up the story and shows the reader what happens every day, then a catalyst happens, and an inciting incident happens that forces the character into an uncomfortable situation. This is what my ‘2 Years’ story is lacking, the entire Act 1 segment that sets up John’s journey to join the Truce Corps.
What I’m reading
This past week I read Geof Darrow’s ‘Shaolin Cowboy’. I love his illustration style he adds so much tiny detail. He reminds me of an adult-themed version of ‘Where’s Waldo’ Martin Handford. As a reader, I can easily tell that Darrow absolutely has a love and passion for wide frame images, and the graphic novel read like a spaghetti western.
The theme of Kung Fu western seemed entertaining enough with heavy influences of magic, demons, and mythologies; but I could not connect so much with the main character since there was no inner monologue, narration, or talking from him. This made it feel like I was very much a passive viewer of the story.
Personal Updates
This was a pretty slow week. I was able to sell a couple more things on eBay and clean up the basement a little bit more. World of Warcraft took up a good chunk of time as well.
I have been trying to be deliberate in making sure my 6 and 4 year old girls do more creative things to spend their time; so they got a lot of crafty things from Christmas. It seems to be working out since they try to stay up late doing craft projects.
