Mystical Steampunk: The Making of CYOA Tarot Deck with Rana and Brian

On episode 403, I was joined by the innovative Rana Tahir and the artistically gifted Brian Anderson, creators of the new Choose Your Own Adventure Tarot Deck. This episode takes us behind the scenes of their collaborative process to reimagine the traditional tarot deck with a unique, steampunk-inspired twist.

Rana and Brian discuss how they integrated a diverse cast of teen characters into the classic tarot archetypes, staying true to the iconic imagery of the Rider-Waite deck while infusing it with fresh, modern aesthetics. Brian, known for his detailed and imaginative art style, shares insights into the artistic decisions that bring each card to life, making the deck not only a tool for divination but also a piece of art.

Rana, the author behind the accompanying 128-page booklet, delves into how the guide helps beginners navigate their tarot reading journey, making the mystical accessible to new audiences. This deck is designed not just for seasoned tarot readers but as a gateway for young enthusiasts and fans of the Choose Your Own Adventure series.

Listeners will get a glimpse into the creative synergy between Rana and Brian, their challenges, and the profound satisfaction of creating something that combines nostalgia with contemporary relevance. This episode is a celebration of creativity, diversity, and the enduring appeal of tarot.

Project Update: Slow but Steady Progress

This week saw only a little movement on my projects, but progress is progress! With Daddest Jokes, I’m still refining the edits to get everything just right, making small but meaningful adjustments each step of the way.

Appliance is still on the backburner for now as other priorities take focus. Even though it’s slow going, I’m grateful for each bit of progress and am looking forward to picking up momentum soon. Thanks for sticking with me through these gradual updates!

What I’m reading: Review – The Funny Moon

A few months back, I had the pleasure of hosting Chris Lincoln on my show to discuss his novel The Funny Moon, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance reader copy from Rootstock Publishing—one of my favorite publishers, known for bringing authentic and compelling voices to readers. Lincoln’s talent shines in this story, which blends humor and emotional depth into a journey of self-discovery and marital reflection.

The Funny Moon centers on Claire, a massage therapist with the unique ability to communicate with animals and the departed, and her husband, Wally, a weary adman and aspiring writer. Lincoln captures the nuances of their relationship with humor and insight, making their challenges as endearing as they are relatable. There are laugh-out-loud moments, especially when Claire's interactions with her quirky clients and four-legged friends take center stage, balanced by scenes that touch on the sometimes-overlooked struggles and joys of a long-term marriage.

Lincoln's storytelling draws readers into a tale that's both funny and poignant—a reminder of how, even in the most unmoored of times, there’s always potential for growth, understanding, and a dash of magic. This is a highly recommended read for those who enjoy humor laced with heart, and hats off to Rootstock Publishing for helping bring The Funny Moon to life.

Personal Update: A Week of Progress and Connections

This week was filled with positive steps forward, especially at the radio station. We’re putting the final touches on our holiday greetings sales, and it’s great to see our two new hires settling into their roles and starting to build real momentum. There’s also an exciting possibility of teaming up with another radio station for some additional programming—new doors are opening, and I’m looking forward to exploring those options.

Election season has officially wrapped up, which means no more election ads on the air. While it was nice to have that boost of ad revenue, it’ll be good to shift focus back to bringing more local businesses into the advertising fold.

On the eBay side, I’ve been having a lot of fun listing new items and seeing sales come through. It’s still a hobby I genuinely enjoy, and keeping up with it adds a bit of variety to the week.

Jane’s visit is winding down as well, and we made the most of her last week here. We were able to catch up with some of our local comic book creator friends at a comic shop in Burlington. It was a great way to connect, share stories, and enjoy some creative energy together.
