In case you missed it, we had a multimedia creator and brilliant Renaissance man, Tony McMillen on our show this past Tuesday. We had a great interview and he talked about his novels, his comic books, and his music. 

We dove into learning more about his creative style and how he is loosely forming a shared universe among all of his stories.

Project Updates

I got some great feedback for my ‘2 Years’ graphic novel.  There is something called the 8-page rule.  This means that you want to get the reader hooked in wanting to follow the protagonist within the first 8 pages, or you lose the reader. 
I’ve gotten great feedback on the book from folks who have been in the Peace Corps, but not so much feedback from folks who have never been in the Peace Corps; so getting their point of view is valuable from my Comics Lab group.

What I’m reading

This week, I read issues 8 – 12 of the Marauders.  It’s one of the new X-titles with the new X-men reboot.

There was a bit of controversy online surrounding Kitty Pryde because she kissed a woman.  I do not think it is a big deal at all and see this as another example of an older generation of readers feeling attacked at updated societal norms. 

Society changes, writers change, art changes; and if one feels that the addition of updating the back story of a character is offensive, then do not read the comic book.  Comic books have always been at the forefront of human rights and social justice issues and that will never change.

Personal Updates

The first week of having a third child has been accomplished.  I often talk about the legitimate joys of having my mother in law live with us, and this week has been absolutely no exception.

She has been the main one to assist the wife with the baby, allowing me to still get work done. 

The two girls have taken a shining to their new baby brother, they love singing to him and watching him sleep.  I’ve been on daughter duty a bit more lately now; helping the oldest with her first-grade school work and working with the 4-year-old on her transition in the family from being the youngest to be a big sister.  It has been tough for a bit, but over time she’ll fit into her new role.
