Book Review: "Better to Be Lucky than Smart" by Bill Mares

I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy of Bill Mares' memoir, "Better to Be Lucky than Smart," and had even scheduled him to come back on my podcast to discuss it. Bill previously appeared on the show a couple of years ago to talk about another one of his books. Tragically, Bill passed away before we could reunite on the podcast, but his memoir stands as a beautiful testament to his remarkable life.

"Better to Be Lucky than Smart" encapsulates the essence of Bill Mares—a man of boundless curiosity and passion. Written in an inviting tone, this memoir captures a life rich with exploration and adventure. Complete with photographs, cartoons, and a foreword by Don Hooper, the book brings Bill's stories vividly to life.

Bill's experiences are incredibly diverse. From his early days in Texas to his global adventures, he shares tales of joining the Marines, publishing a book on basic training, teaching high school history in Vermont, and serving in the state legislature. His passions for beekeeping, home brewing, running, choral singing, and photography further illustrate his multifaceted life.

Advanced praise highlights the memoir's impact. Stephen P. Kiernan calls it a "first-rate yarn," perfect for enjoying with a home brew. John Donnelly notes Bill's open-mindedness and adventure-seeking nature, while Bill Schubart praises its luminous narrative. Reeve Lindbergh finds the memoir captivating and joyful, and Sue Miller marvels at Bill's myriad talents and adventures.

"Better to Be Lucky than Smart" is not just a collection of stories; it's a celebration of a life well-lived. It reminds us of the importance of embracing opportunities, no matter how diverse or challenging. Bill Mares' memoir is a fitting tribute to his legacy and is highly recommended for an inspiring and heartfelt read. His memory, and his words, will continue to inspire all who read this remarkable book.
