Gentrification Through the Eyes of a Black Lesbian Detective: "Usurpation" by Marie St. Pez

In the latest episode of Storycomic Presents, we had the privilege of hosting Marie St. Pez, a Vermont-based author celebrated for her deep dives into complex social issues through her literary works. Her novel, "Usurpation," masterfully tackles the intricate and contentious topics of gentrification, systemic racism, and police corruption, set against the backdrops of Portland, Oregon, and New Orleans.

Marie discussed how her own experiences in these cities during the 1990s shaped her narrative approach. She brings to life the character of Kitty Feliz, a Black lesbian historian, who through her poignant musings connects the historical with the personal. Marie's storytelling is not just about presenting facts but about breathing life into the experiences that often go unheard in mainstream discussions about urban development and racial dynamics.

The author's passionate discourse during the interview highlighted her unique ability to weave personal histories with broader socio-political contexts, making "Usurpation" a compelling read for anyone interested in the real-world impacts of gentrification on marginalized communities. This interview is a must-watch for those who seek to understand the nuances of social justice and the power of literature to inspire change.

Project Update: 'Appliance' TTRPG Making Steady Progress

I’m thrilled to share an exciting update on the 'Appliance' tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG)! This week, I added another 3,000 words to the project, which is a significant step forward. As I work towards a final product, I’m aiming for a total of around 300 pages—200 pages of written content and 100 pages of illustrations.

The new material has really helped bring the core mechanics and world-building elements to life. It’s been rewarding to see the game take shape with each new addition. The balance between the text and illustrations is crucial, and I’m excited about how both aspects are coming together to create an immersive and engaging experience for players.

With every word added, I’m getting closer to realizing the full potential of 'Appliance.' The progress may be incremental, but it’s steady, and I’m eager to keep pushing forward.

Exploring Timeless Trails: A Local’s Take on Mary L. Kibling’s Walks and Rambles in the Upper Connecticut River Valley

As someone who grew up in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, I’ve always cherished the natural beauty of this region. Mary L. Kibling’s Walks and Rambles in the Upper Connecticut River Valley: From Quebec to the Massachusetts Border is a guidebook that has stood the test of time. Over 30 years since its publication, this book remains a reliable companion for anyone looking to explore the area’s diverse trails. Kibling’s meticulous descriptions and insights capture the essence of our landscape, from serene river walks to challenging mountain hikes.

What truly makes this book remarkable is how well it has aged. The trails Kibling covers are still being maintained, providing hikers with the same breathtaking views and peaceful retreats that she so lovingly described decades ago. As a local, I can attest that the places highlighted in this guidebook remain as enchanting as ever, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, Kibling’s book is a treasure that continues to guide both locals and visitors alike through the stunning vistas and hidden gems of the Upper Connecticut River Valley.

Personal Update: Birthday Celebrations and Busy Weekends

This past week has been a whirlwind of activity, filled with both family celebrations and late-night work at the radio station.

Elizabeth's 10th Birthday Party

We kicked off the weekend with Elizabeth’s 10th birthday party on Saturday. Her actual birthday is next week, but we celebrated a little early with friends and family. It’s hard to believe she’s already hitting double digits—time really does fly, and it’s a significant reminder that kids grow up way too fast.

Late Night at the Radio Station

Saturday night was a late one for me as I ran the board at the radio station and helped get everything set up for the Bear Ridge race. This was the fourth race we’ve broadcasted this year, with just three more left in the season. After that, we’ll be shifting gears to basketball season, which I’m really looking forward to.

Outdoor Show Preparations

On top of all that, I’m also making the final preparations for the outdoor show we’re launching next month. There’s a lot to get ready, but everything is coming together nicely, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.
