From Folk Legends to Country Roots: Unpacking Rik Palieri’s "Hands of Time"

In the latest episode of Storycomic Presents, we had the pleasure of hosting Rik Palieri, an acclaimed musician known for his deep roots in folk music and his recent exploration into the country genre with his new album, "Hands of Time." Rik’s passion for preserving musical traditions while embracing new styles shines through in this engaging discussion.

"Hands of Time" represents a culmination of Rik’s fifty years in music, drawing inspiration from folk legends like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, and venturing into the sounds that colored his childhood, influenced by country icons like Johnny Cash. The album blends these influences into a rich tapestry that pays homage to traditional sounds while forging new paths in country roots music.

During the interview, Rik shared captivating stories from his musical career, including memorable interactions with some of the giants of the folk world. He also delved into the creative process behind "Hands of Time," describing it as a labor of love aimed at bridging the gap between old and new musical expressions.

Listeners will find Rik’s insights into the evolution of music genres particularly enlightening, as he articulates how traditional forms can adapt and thrive in a modern context. This episode not only highlights Rik’s profound musical expertise but also his ability to articulate the emotional and historical significance of his work.

"Hands of Time" is more than just an album; it's a narrative woven through melodies and lyrics, crafted by a musician who lives and breathes his art. Rik Palieri’s interview offers a profound look into the heart of a true artist committed to storytelling through music.

Project Update: Slow Progress on Daddest Jokes

It's been a bit of a slow week for projects.  (refer to the Personal Update section) I’ve made some steady progress on Daddest Jokes, continuing to fine-tune the content and work on edits, but nothing too major to report. As for Appliance, I didn’t get a chance to work on it this week, so that’s on hold for now.

Thanks for sticking with me—hopefully, next week will see some bigger updates!

Book Review: The Secret of the Unicorn by Hergé

The Secret of the Unicorn is another gem in the Tintin series that I thoroughly enjoyed. As a fan of globe-trotting treasure hunts, this adventure ticked all the boxes. It combines the classic Tintin mystery and excitement with the added layer of delving into Captain Haddock’s family history, giving us a deeper look into one of the most beloved characters in the series.

Nostalgia plays a big part in why I love these Tintin books, and this one didn’t disappoint. It brought back all the excitement I felt reading Tintin’s adventures as a kid. The intrigue begins with a simple model ship that Tintin stumbles upon at the Old Street Market, which soon unravels into a thrilling search for pirate treasure. The model ship, the Unicorn, has ties to one of Captain Haddock’s ancestors, and this connection gives the story an extra layer of richness. The idea of solving a centuries-old mystery while hopping between locations around the world is just the kind of story I love sinking my teeth into.

Hergé's illustrations remain as captivating as ever, filled with incredible detail and a sense of adventure. This book serves as the perfect setup for its sequel, Red Rackham’s Treasure, and it leaves you eager for the next chapter of the journey.

Personal Update: A Week of Reflection and New Beginnings

This past week has been an emotional rollercoaster, filled with both personal loss and professional developments. Now that the obituaries are out, I can share that my Great Uncle Tony passed away on October 3rd, and we had his funeral this past Friday. It was a time to remember and honor him, but it’s always tough saying goodbye.

Just a day after that, on October 4th, my mother-in-law passed away. This has been especially hard on all of us since she had lived with us for the past 10 years. She was a wonderful grandmother to our kids and a strong supporter of me and my Storycomic work. Her presence in our home is deeply missed, and her loss has left a significant void in our lives.

On the work side of things, the radio station saw some positive movement as our two new hires started working this week. It’s been busy training them and getting everything up to speed, but I’m hopeful for the direction we’re heading in.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out with kind words—it's a tough time, but I’m grateful for the support from family, friends, and colleagues.

Saying goodbye...
