What I’m reading

As a father to an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old, I always look for books that entertain and teach valuable lessons. "Phoebe and her Unicorn" by Dana Simpson was a delightful surprise, reminiscent of the beloved "Calvin and Hobbes." This charming graphic novel exceeded my expectations, seamlessly blending themes found in YA novels with the innocent adventures of childhood.

When we opened the book, my daughters were captivated by the whimsical world of Phoebe and her extraordinary unicorn friend. The vibrant illustrations and witty dialogue brought the characters to life, sparking laughter and firing their imaginations. We were all swept up in Phoebe's imaginative escapades, sharing her triumphs and misadventures.

What impressed me most about "Phoebe and her Unicorn" was its ability to address deeper themes while preserving childhood innocence. Friendship, self-discovery, and embracing uniqueness were subtly woven into the narrative, resonating with my daughters subconsciously. These gentle messages guide them as they navigate their journeys.

The dynamic between Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, was an absolute delight. Phoebe's boundless imagination complemented Marigold's witty observations, creating a perfect balance. Their friendship exemplified the power of accepting others for who they are, flaws and all.

"Phoebe and her Unicorn" shares the spirit of childhood wonder and imaginative exploration in "Calvin and Hobbes." It possesses its unique charm, capturing the essence of contemporary times and appealing to young readers today. The humor and charm of the book evoked nostalgic memories of my childhood experiences with beloved comic strips and graphic novels.
