Project Updates

I worked more on the Sheena story for the upcoming anthology I’m going to be a part of.

I’m doing it all through Procreate, so it has been a great learning process for me to utilize this small project to learn the app for my upcoming larger projects.

What I’m reading

This past week, I’ve been reading more public domain golden age comics; mainly the old Sheena comics to help me out with the writing styles of the 1940s.

The Jungle-themed comics of the 1940s definitely had an air of colonialism and flagrant racism that we thankfully do not see in mainstream comics today.  Also on the surface, the ‘jungle queen’ theme could be seen as being progressive for its time with a powerful female protagonist; but with a modicum of effort in reading a few stories, there is still a strong sense of misogyny and objectification.

I am excited to work on my version of Sheena.  it will interesting to combine this style with a children’s book style.

Personal Updates

Nostalgia abounds for me this week!  I ordered from Bricklink the first Lego set I ever owned from back in 1988.  It was the ‘Forestmen’s Hideout’ and I had such a giddy delight putting it together this past week.

On a similar note, I bought the reissue of the transformer I owned as a child as well.  It was the Autobot, ‘Grapple’.

Not sure if it was because the toy was not the original, or if I did not have memories as strong as the Lego set, but I did not get an overwhelming sense of nostalgia from the transformer.
